Rennell Island, locally known as Mugaba, is the main island of two inhabited islands that make up the Rennell and Bellona Province in the . Rennell Island has a land area of 660 square kilometres (250 sq mi) that is about 80 kilometres (50 mi) long and 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) wide. It is the second largest raised coral atoll in the world with the largest lake in the insular Pacific (Lake Tegano) that is listed as a World Heritage Site. Rennell Island has a population of about 1840 persons of Polynesian descent who primarily speak Renbelian, Pijin and some English. Rennell and Bellona Islands are two of the few islands in the Melanesian Solomon Island archipelago classified Polynesian (others being Sikaiana, Ontong Java, Tikopia, Anuta, Duff Islands and some Reef Islands).
The island lies 236 kilometres (147 mi) south of Honiara and 1,900 kilometres (1,200 mi) north-east of Brisbane. The provincial capital, Tigoa, is at the western end of the island.

Marovo Lagoon is the largest saltwater lagoon in the world. It is located in the New Georgia Islands, north of Vangunu Island, at 8.48°S 158.07°E. There are many islands in the lagoon, some of which are inhabited. The people live mainly by subsistence agricultureand fishing and speak the Marovo language. The lagoon is a popular destination for diving.
The spectacular double-sided Mataniko Falls thunder into a cave full of stalagmites, swooping swallows and bats. During WWII, the cave was a hide-out for Japanese soldiers trying to avoid capture by the Americans. The trail on the way is often steep, and you might do better with a guide after Tuvaruhu (ask at the visitor information centre in Honiara).
Kennedy Island (colloquially known as Plum Pudding Island, though the correct local name is Kasolo Island) is an island in the Solomon Islands that was named after John F. Kennedy. It was on this island that Lt. John F. Kennedy aided his injured crew after his boat, the PT-109, was rammed by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri in World War II. Two American sailors died in the incident.
